Shoot Your Best Scores with a Golf Ball that Offers Total Performance

by Hawkeye Golf July 31, 2019

Ask any novice or experienced golfer and they’ll tell you that there’s no shortage of varieties in golf balls available in the market.

Golf balls are designed for specific tasks, such as, achieving better precision in each shot or reaching a greater distance.

While some golf balls available in the market are good at achieving those specific tasks, others are not. The real challenge for a golfer is to identify the ball best suited to their strengths, which can be a tough nut to crack.

Keeping that in mind, here we’re going to take a quick look at the various factors that make a good golf ball.

The Golf Ball’s Exterior

At first sight, all golf balls look similar. On closer inspection, you will find that even the exterior of golf balls can vary, and this has an impact on your performance. Golf balls that have a soft cover are not as resistant to scratches compared to golf balls that have hardcovers.

When it comes to the dimples on a golf ball, the average golf ball may have anywhere between 300 to 500 dimples. These dimples affect the way the ball travels through the air.

Golf balls that have more dimples fly lower, while balls that have fewer and larger dimples tend to fly higher.

The Build of the Golf Ball

A golf ball can feature a one-piece, two, three or even four-piece construction. Beginners are usually advised to use the one-piece golf ball. This type of ball is soft to the touch but lacks carrying distance, which is why it is not preferred by professional golfers.

On the other hand, one-piece golf balls are durable and inexpensive, making them the best choice for beginners.

The two-piece golf ball is firmer and offers more distance, but isn’t easy to control. That being said, the two-piece golf ball is the preferred choice for many intermediate golfers since they offer better-shot distance.

The three-piece golf ball is softer compared to the one and two-piece golf ball. It also tends to spin more in the air, which offers better control. The three-piece golf ball is the preferred choice for advanced players.

Four-piece golf balls are not widely used, but they offer the same properties as a three-piece golf ball, with the addition of more control.

Distance and Control

Golf balls that are harder perform better in terms of distance. This is because these golf balls have been designed to react quickly once struck. Golf balls that feature a harder construction can help golfers achieve up to 20 yards with each strike. The downside is these golf balls tend to be harder to control.

The other type offers better control by reducing the amount of spin on the ball once struck. These balls are ideal for hitting those slices and hooks on the green.

Another type of golf ball has been designed specifically to increase the amount of spin on the ball when struck. This type of golf ball is mostly used by professional golfers who harness the high rate of spin to hit the ball in a tight space or hit the ball with more control.

There are various factors that need to be considered when buying a golf ball. It’s best to know the course, your own skill level and what you want to achieve out on the course. Let these factors drive your pick and once you know what you’re looking for, check out our collection of golf balls.
